This Sunday, In America, is Father’s Day. On this Sunday, in Rome, Pope Francis is offering a special Mass for the sanctity of human life, a life given by the source of all life, our heavenly Father. It is also the Day of the Gospel of Life, one of the official observances of the Year of Faith. This is to remind us that being “prolife” is not just a philosophical or political preference; it is, rather, an integral aspect of our Faith. Saying “yes” to Jesus Christ means saying “yes” to life, because life is an expression of the Father’s Will and His image, and is chosen by Him before it is chosen by us. Every human life, no matter how young or small or dependent, belongs to God, and is destined for His throne. All that we believe in faith shows us God’s care for life and His plan to give us life here and now, and forever heaven.

“The life I live now is not my own…” This bold declaration, in the second reading of today’s Mass, indicates the foundation of the pro‐life convictions of the Catholic Church: we belong to God! This statement, from Galatians 2, parallels that of St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians 6:19: “You are not your own.”

At issue in the struggle to defend, protect and promote life is not simply the question, “When does life begin?” It is, rather, the question, “To whom does life belong?” The fact that each human life belongs to God is what we mean when we say that all life is “sacred.” Because each life belongs to God, no other human being may own or kill that life, including his own. This is why David’s act of killing Uriah, referenced in today’s first reading, was condemned by Nathan as evil. The awesome calling of fathering (and mothering) ‐‐ parenting, is revealed here, since both parents are entrusted with the gift of life, which does not ultimately belong to them, but which, nevertheless, they cooperate with the Creator to bring it about. The Church wants to make it clear that to defend, welcome and nurture the gift of human life is integral to the faith. To say ‘Yes’ to Jesus Christ is to say ‘Yes’ to life.” The assertion of St. Paul, “I still live my human life, but it is a life of faith…”, shows us another reason why the defense of life is so fundamental to the Church. As Blessed John Paul II wrote in his encyclical, “Evangelium Vitae” (“The Gospel of Life”), “Man is called to a fullness of life which far exceeds the dimensions of his earthly existence, because it consists in sharing the very life of God. The loftiness of this supernatural vocation reveals the greatness and the inestimable value of human life even in its temporal phase. Life in time, in fact, is the fundamental condition, the initial stage and an integral part of the entire unified process of human existence” (EV #2). In other words, we must defend the natural gift of human life, in order that people may, with a sure foundation, take hold of life eternal. As we proclaim the absolute demands of respect for life, we also proclaim the infinite mercy of God, especially toward those who have taken life. This Sunday’s readings give us an opportunity to renew the Church’s invitation to fathers or mothers, who have participated in abortion, to come to Him for forgiveness and peace. Our God is a God of mercy, and if we seek it, He will grant it.

Pope Francis is celebrating a Mass in Saint Peter’s Square this Sunday morning, June 16 at 10:30. I encourage the families of our parish to join in prayer with the Holy Father and all those who will be gathered in Rome this Father’s Day, that the gift of human life may be ever more respected and protected, by all fathers ‐‐ and mothers ‐‐ and all who call God “Our Father.” I pray that this Year of Faith, and this Day of the Gospel of Life, and our American Father’s Day will strengthen our pro‐life convictions, words, and actions!

Just a reminder: After celebrating the 11:30 a.m. Mass this Sunday, Father Danis will be honored with a reception in our parish hall, and we invite you to join him there. What a nice way to honor him who has served as a spiritual “Father” for 46 years, now!

Next Sunday is Father’s Day, a wonderful time set aside to honor our fathers, whether here on earth or in heaven. Though they are one of the two primary nurturers of the family, they have been often ridiculed in today’s society in an unscrupulous effort to undercut the importance of their role, especially that of the equal partner in marriage to a woman. Our TV sitcoms are among the more notorious culprits in demeaning their importance, whether through subtle denigration of their traditional role or outright demasculinization of their traditional position as head and protector of the family. Likewise, certain radical feminist organizations are doing their utmost to destroy the many positive images we have of fatherfigures role models, including their “anti-patriarchal” attacks on the Catholic Church, its Pope and a male hierarchy. Other circumstances, such as today’s shaky economy or the need to be away from the home for lengthy periods of time due to limited employment opportunities or military service, tend to lessen their importance as a needed male role model in the family. So, we want to assure our Dads that they are important to us and are precious in God’s eyes just as all His children are.

Next Sunday, we will honor Father Danis Ridore, a priest for 46 years and Parochial Vicar (Assistant Pastor) here for over the past ten years, with a reception in the parish hall after the 11:30 a.m. Mass that he will celebrate. Fr. Danis, who is nearing his 75th year, is approaching Senior Priest status, and will be taking on a new assignment that will be announced shortly. Though he is in good health, he deserves a break at this stage of his life. I hope that you will be able to join us in honoring him for all of his faithful service to God’s people over the years, by coming to his Mass and the reception that follows.

By now, you have heard the sad news that St. Mark’s Catholic School in Boynton Beach is closing its doors. It’s not a happy occasion for those parishioners and students, nor for anyone who has passed through those hallowed doors of that great school over the years. As a result, we are being called upon to try to absorb a good part of their student population into our school. Our own enrollment has been increasing, and we are near capacity with our own parishioners. Now we will be getting two new modular classrooms to add to our existing complex, in order to properly meet our needs for the coming year. If the trend continues, we may need to make a more permanent expansion of our existing school. That will require a feasibility study, later followed by a fund-raising campaign. It’s nice to know that we can continue to grow because of the wonderful programs we offer in our school. Many applications came into Mrs. Delgado’s office over the course of the past few weeks, and she and her committee have the difficult and tedious task of deciding who will be accepted. As always, active parishioner-families will head the list. That’s one of the reasons why we encourage participation in our program of stewardship of time, talent and treasure.

Several recent graduates of our eighth grade have received generous scholarships to Pope John Paul II High School in Boca Raton and other nearby schools, worth several thousands of dollars. I hope that this sign of continued student achievement in many areas of education will enable more people to see the benefits of a good Catholic education in our parish school. Many of our enhanced programs often outflank those offered by the public schools and several of the costlier private schools in the area, and I thank all who support our Catholic school, particularly donors to the Ferrer Fund.

Next Sunday, we will take up that special collection for the victims of the Oklahoma tornado tragedies, as well as anticipating any future needs of this year regarding disasters and tragedies. Your response for previous charitable collections in various charitable appeals has been superb, and I hope that we can turn to your kind hearts for a suitable gift to those whose lives have been severely affected by devastating developments.

A brief reminder: there is no 7:00 a.m. Mass on Saturdays in our church during the months of June, July and August. We will resume the regular Saturday Mass schedule on the first Saturday of September.

As we journey through the days of summer, please stay close to Jesus, and come to worship God each weekend; your future depends on it! Don’t give the Evil One a chance to loosen your hold on God’s life in you.
